Chapter 21

Nicole sat with her hand on Aria's thigh, unwilling to remove it despite that fact that a few minutes had passed since she confessed to Aria. Aria sat with her eyes shut and her head leaned back on the arm of the couch, no doubt deep in thought. Usually Nicole would have been tempted to interrupt Aria's thoughts and ask for a response, but this time was different. Aria had already admitted that she had feelings for her. Nicole smiled. The fact that Aria hadn't pushed her hand off her thigh, further cemented her belief that once Aria worked through whatever she needed to work through, they would be together. Nicole's heart skipped as the tingles rushed down to her fingertips. She hated to rush things or be tacky, but if Aria gave her the right signs, then she was very much looking forward to running her hand further up her thigh, ready to find out just how much the sounds Aria might make, might match the beautiful sounds she made on stage while performing.

Nicole felt Aria's thigh flex as she sat up. She squeezed Aria's thigh as she looked into her beautiful eyes. “So?”

Aria took a deep breath and shook her head. “I'm sorry, Nic, I can't be with you.”

Nicole's jaw dropped. That was the last thing she expected to hear. A few minutes ago, Aria had admitted to still having feelings for her. Nicole's hand fell away from Aria's thigh. She saw Aria's lips moving, but she couldn't hear a word she said. Time seemed to move slower, and everything went quiet except for the sound of her heartbeat, whose speed and noise had increased significantly. Nicole made to stand up, needing to get away from Aria, but her legs wouldn't support her. She got up halfway, then fell back against the chair.

Nicole squeezed her eyes shut. “Why? Why can't you be with me?”

“There are several reasons, but first off, how about the fact that you're still not over what happened fifteen years ago.”

Nicole's eyes flew open, and she sat up. If that was Aria's problem, then it could be easily fixed. “Look at me Aria. I've forgiven you. Please believe that.”

“I know that you think you have, but I saw how mad you were at me a few days ago. That kind of anger doesn't just disappear.”

Nicole shook her head. “I'm not saying it has. I'll admit that a part of me still feels upset, but I have forgiven you. Forgiveness is not a feeling; it's a decision. One that I've made. Yes, the hurt is still there, but so are my feelings for you.”

Aria stood up and ran another hand through her hair. “And that's another thing. Do you really have feelings for me? A few days ago, you hated my guts, and for the entire length of our friendship, you never once felt anything for me. How do you expect me to believe that you suddenly woke up and want me?”

Nicole threw her hands up in an “I give up” gesture.
